At Black Funding Network, we are committed to supporting Black-led grassroots organisations that drive meaningful change in their communities. One of our past grantees, 100 Black Men of London, is making a profound impact through their Community Mentoring Programme, a life-changing initiative designed to empower young Black boys and girls with essential life skills, leadership training, and mentorship opportunities.
A Holistic Approach to Mentorship
The Community Mentoring Programme is built on the principle of “Mentoring the 100 Way across a Lifetime,” ensuring that young people receive continuous support as they grow. The initiative consists of four core components:
1. Me I Can Be Programme
This 13-week life skills programme caters to two age groups:
- Me I Can Be 1 (ages 10-12)
- Me I Can Be 2 (ages 13-16)
The programme covers vital topics such as self-identity, family roles, goal-setting, peer relationships, mental health, and the dangers of substance abuse and violence. By equipping young people with confidence and resilience, 100 Black Men of London ensures they are prepared to navigate life’s challenges and work towards their aspirations.

2. Youth Leadership Academy (YLA)
Building upon the foundations laid in Me I Can Be, the Youth Leadership Academy (YLA) develops leadership skills in young people, encouraging them to take initiative and become positive contributors to their communities. Topics include money management, career development, conflict resolution, and navigating street life. This programme enables young Black boys and girls to step into leadership roles with confidence and a strong sense of purpose.

3. Peer Mentoring Programme
Graduates of Me I Can Be and the YLA are given the opportunity to mentor their peers, equipping them with advanced skills such as public speaking, project management, and teamwork. Through this initiative, young people not only benefit from mentorship but also learn how to pass on their knowledge and inspire others. A defining feature of this programme is that peer mentors actively deliver sessions in the Me I Can Be programme, reinforcing their own learning while shaping the next generation of mentees.

4. Parents in Partnership (PIP)
Recognising the critical role parents play in a child’s development, the Parents in Partnership (PIP) Programme provides a supportive space for parents to discuss key parenting challenges. Topics include social media influence, gang involvement, single parenting, raising boys vs. girls, and proactive approaches to sexual health and education. By strengthening parental support, the programme ensures that families are equipped to provide guidance and stability to their children.

A Year of Impact and Growth
The Community Mentoring Programme operates fortnightly throughout the school year, culminating in an inspiring Graduation Ceremony in June. The consistent and structured nature of the programme ensures that mentees receive sustained support as they grow and develop.
The impact of this initiative is profound—young people emerge from the programme with a clear sense of identity, stronger leadership abilities, and a commitment to uplifting their communities. Parents also report feeling more empowered in their roles, knowing they have access to a strong support network.
